Town travelled to Yealmpton on Sunday for the 1st Leg of the Cup Competition between the sides. The home side started better and were 27-39 up at the half way point but Town fought back to level the scores by the 14th end at 53-all. This effort took its toll and Yealmpton came back to win by 63-73, leaving Town to pull back 10 shots in the 2nd leg in July.
Eric Fitch’s rink had a good start and 2 counts of 5 gave them a healthy lead, 19-2 at the break. This was extended to 24-5 by end 14 but the home side scored 9 shots in the final 5 ends to reduce the deficit to 10 shots. David Thorne’s trio were involved in a close match but a count of 5 shots on the 14th end proved decisive as this was the winning margin. The other 2 rinks got off to terrible starts. Keith Baston’s rink was 2-20 down after 13 ends but 8 shots in the last 5 ends made the score respectable. Similarly, Ray Lancaster’s rink was 0-18 at the break but 12 shots in the next 4 ends was not enough as the home side replied with 10 shots in the last 5 ends.
